Letter from new FLS President

Colleagues,

As Elizabeth mentioned at our last meeting, I will be taking over as president of the CCBA FLS in September. I want to thank Elizabeth and her fellow officers, Laura Mancuso and Robin Krane, for all their hard work last year. I look forward to working with Meredith McKell Graff and Jennifer Kirkman in the upcoming year.

I will be using the summer “down” months in preparation of our Fall section meeting. If people have suggestions, please feel free to call or email me. I have already had suggestions about a detailed Treasurer report each month.

Also, please note there has been a form change on the Washington Court’s website. We have a new “Declaration in Support of Parenting Plan” as of this month. It is downloadable for free here: http://www.courts.wa.gov/forms/

QUESTION: Is anyone interested in setting up a similar workshop for men? I have been approached about this. However, I think it would be better if men led that effort. If anyone is interested in exploring that possibility, please contact me: Vickie Kesala 326-3083 or vkesala@gmail.com.

CCBA IMPORTANT UPDATE

All –

It was brought to my attention that Diane Wheeler was laid off by the Board of Directors yesterday. As of today, the CCBA does not have an Executive Director.

I’m not sure if everyone is aware of the amount of time and effort Diane gives the FLS. She has been a major source of support for us. For the foreseeable future, our FLS officers must cover her duties. This puts enormous importance on our officers for next year. If there is no CCBA next year, there is no question that we should continue the FLS as but we will need to make some major changes like reformulating the duties of our officers and possibly adding another officer.

There is a CCBA General Meeting on Monday, May 9 (this coming Monday) and I think it would be a good idea if our members attended.

Diane wants the group to know how much she enjoyed and appreciated working with us and that she will miss us all.

Recap and Upcoming Meetings

The Family Law Section April 2011 meeting was hit with a snafu! Our scheduled speaker, Josh Foreman, was scheduled to take the train from King County to Clark County in order to join us. Unfortunately, I learned two hours in advance that the train Josh was scheduled to take was delayed and he could not make it. I was forced to find some content for our members at the last minute but thanks to the camaraderie and overall interest our members have in lively discussion, I had two members, Jolene Sell and Steve Bogdon lead discussion. Both were quite interesting and informative. One discussion was about a potential requirement for parents going through divorces in Clark County to take a parenting class. This is currently a requirement in Idaho and Oregon. I have received a lot of feedback from our members on this topic.

During the April meeting we learned that Michael Langsdorf is retiring so congratulations to Michael! Also, the FLS voted to sponsor the annual Clark County Bar Association BBQ as we did last year.

Our next meeting will be May 12 in the lounge at Tommy O’s in downtown Vancouver from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. per usual. The topic is “Building Bridges, Managing Conflict: What we can Learn from Neuroscience” with Lydia Byhardt Bollinger, a licensed clinical social worker with certificates in both marriage and family therapy and trauma counseling, and Erin Ruff, a conflict resolution specialist, mediator, trainer, and public policy advocate. They will discuss what happens in the brain when a person experiences conflict; when you try to help others solve conflicts; what neuroscience can teach us about how to facilitate conflict resolution; and, how to prevent future conflicts.

Our last meeting for the year will be June 9, same time, same place. The topic: “When Your Client Needs Financial Planning: how an investment firm, a bank, and an independent financial planner can help.” Helping family law attorneys offer options to our clients will be guest speakers: Andy Nygard with Edward Jones , Jennifer Rhoads, Director of Wealth Management with First Independent Bank, and Mark Martel with Martel Wealth Advisors Inc.

Remember that we need new officers for next year so please consider volunteering! We have three positions, President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Serving as an officer is a great way to connect with your colleagues. Please let me know if you are interested in serving the FLS.

FLS Update

The Family Law Section March 2011 meeting was spectacular! We had renowned writer Phil Margolin featured as our guest speaker. He spoke about his days as a trial attorney, his path to being a celebrated writer, and his humorous outlook on his books becoming movies. Mr. Margolin drew a large crowd and was a pleasure to have our guest.

Our next meeting will be April 14 and I am excited to introduce Joshua Foreman, a prominent attorney from King County, as our presenter. Mr. Foreman will speak to the group about his specialty of the law (Dad’s) and his theory on how to win a custody case. Mr. Foreman is well known for his marketing niche as an attorney fighting for Dad’s. We are offering one CLE credit for this presentation.

Our last meeting in June before our summer hiatus is right around the corner so I’d like all of our members to start thinking about being an officer for the FLS next year. We have three positions, President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Serving as an officer is a great way to connect with your colleagues. Please let me know if you are interested in serving the FLS.

As a reminder, the monthly meetings are every second Thursday of the month. We have social time from 11:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and then a presentation from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. The meetings are typically held at Tommy O’s in downtown Vancouver and cost $13.00 for lunch. If you are a member of the CCBA and FLS the CLE credit costs $5.00. For nonmembers, the CLE credit costs $10.00

If you would like to attend a CCBA FLS meeting and do not currently receive the email updates, please email me at Elizabeth@elizabethchristy.com.

BARRISTERS BALL

DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE BARRISTER'S BALL ON SATURDAY!

NEW SELF SUPPORT RESERVE

The self-support reserve in the Child Support Worksheets has changed.

As you may know, the self-support reserve is calculated at 125% of the federal poverty level.

HHS published in the Federal Register last week the new 2011 HHS Poverty Guidelines, which say that the poverty level for this year is $10,890. Multiplied by 125% and divided by 12 months makes the new self-support reserve $1,134 per month (a whopping $6 increase!). I'

There have also been some changes to tax withholding--income tax withholding increased and FICA decreased.
